SPRING IS IN THE AIR

The little rascals get everywhere if you are not careful.  Since the Cobra does not have a spring set to play with I have tried anything that I can lay hands on.  In order to be able to switch from one manufacturer to another I have tested each type of spring using an electronic kitchen scale and a pair of spacers to ensure that each spring tested is compressed over the same length of travel.
The chart below shows the results of this work and can be used as a guide for the relative spring rates.

When this page was initially written, the prototype car had Losi silver fronts fitted to the rear and Schumacher yellows on the front.  A plan was also afoot to try Schumacher Greys on the rear.  We are now way past there, having tried the Greys and moved on to Blues on the rear.  This seems to be the way to go.  Last Sunday, 23/7/00, we managed to finish third in the B Final at a Club Championship meeting at Southport.

The car seemed much happier over the bumps.  Currently I am experimenting to see what happens when the top link is used at its shortest possible length.

The front shocks are the original kit but I have fitted Associated units on the rear.  When the dust has settled and I know that everything else is right, I shall revert to the original rear units as well.  One has to remove some of the unknowns in order to make progress.

To complete the story, 40wt oil is used front and rear.
